loading movies to an external hard drive.
« on: August 06, 2013, 06:01:24 AM »
Looking into getting an external HD for movies while deployed. Is it possible to load the movies and music already on my tablet to such a device? What about movies from the play store?

You can use a micro.USB to standard USB cable to run movies, music, pictures through your tablet with one of the apps set up for it (some require rooting and some don't). Make sure the movie is in the right format like a .mp4 format or similar (can be done with a free program called handBrake). The max sized thumb drive it can see is about 16 GB but with that you will get close to 16 movies on it. Hope that helps.

You can use the separate hard drive, but you need an OTG cable, and the Nexus Media Importer app, and a powered usb, as the Nexus does not provide power enough for powering the external HD.

I use an OTG cable an a usb thumb drive and StickMount on a rooted Nexus 10 and play movies directly from the thumb drive, as another alternative. Admittedly you can only load as many movies as my thumb drive's capacity allows, but most of my movies are 1-1.5 GB, so I can load 10 movies easily and power the drive from my tablet. Just remember that you will drain your battery at a rapid rate playing movies.
